Yulin Zhai Junior Division A
Canada
Born and raised outside of Beijing, China, Yulin grew up with an appetite for picking up instruments…and the inability to put them down. In seemingly no time this translated to a personal investment in the study of classical music through the medium of the Violin. Yulin traded the homeland and moved halfway across the globe to Vancouver, Canada in 2010.
Now a rising senior at St. George’s School in British Columbia, Yulin’s world views have been shaped by the interface of mathematics and music. Yulin completed his RCM level 10 exam with first-class honours and distinction in 2019 and has been part of the VanStrings Chamber music, where Yulin and his peers perform weekly at various senior homes across the lower mainlands, for the last 4 years. Yulin also serves as the vice-president for SuperJoey Vancouver, where he works directly with Vancouver’s Ronald McDonald house to provide donations annually through concerts, venues, and other charitable performances. At present, Yulin explores his interests in mathematics and music by assisting Princeton professor Ben Krause in Harmonic Analysis by researching the equidistribution of sounds; using mathematics to describe and express constructive/destructive interference, musical harmonics, and resonance. When Yulin has time to spare, he enjoys competing in tennis tournaments and loves to go on runs with friends.
